A Special Giving Opportunity for Friends of the Van Alstyne Library
The family of Dorothy Conner Loftice and the Friends of the Van Alstyne Library have established Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers, a project that provides WI-FI mobile hotspots that can be checked out by students and other Van Alstyne Library users. Check out KXII-TV’s video about the program.
Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers honors the memory of our loved one, friend and neighbor, Dorothy Conner Loftice.
Why is your Gift Important to Van Alstyne's Students?
Many families in our rural school district cannot afford internet access at home. Neighborhoods outside the city limits are not typically wired for the internet, leaving families to choose between giving their children expensive wireless internet to help them with their studies or paying for food and housing.
The impact of the digital divide is so pervasive that educators have a name for it: The homework gap.
Studies throughout the country have demonstrated that providing free internet access at home to students who cannot afford it levels the academic playing field. Teachers say that being able to access the internet at home improves their students’ grades, homework completion, and teamwork with their fellow students.
Clicking the heels of her ruby slippers in the classic tale gave a girl the power to go home.
By donating to Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers, you can help give library users the power of WI-FI to click and explore anywhere and everywhere they want to go.
